A road without adequate lighting

Route 78, which connects Santiago with San Antonio, is one of the busiest motorways in Chile. However, on a 25-kilometre stretch, the lack of lighting posed a clear risk. Night-time traffic became more dangerous and drivers and pedestrians on access roads and at junctions lacked the necessary visibility to move around safely.

Insecurity, costs and technical complexity

The concessionaire faced a common dilemma in large-scale projects: installing conventional lighting meant complex works with trenching and cabling, as well as ongoing electricity consumption and high long-term bills. Added to this was the difficulty of maintenance on a high-traffic road, making the traditional solution an impractical and costly option.

Asolar lighting for 25 km of motorway

The alternative came with the installation of Staria solar streetlights, designed specifically for roads and major thoroughfares. These self-contained luminaires ensure constant lighting without the need for grid connection, which drastically reduced installation and operating costs.

The solar technology applied on Route 78 brings key advantages:

  • Increased road safety with all-round visibility.
  • Cost reduction by eliminating electricity consumption.
  • Quick installation without invasive works.
  • Reliable operation even in low solar irradiance conditions.

Today, Ruta 78 is an example of how solar energy can transform road concessions in Chile, offering a modern, efficient and sustainable solution that improves the safety of thousands of users every day.
