Árural areas without lighting

In different remote areas of the Basque Country, residents shared the same problem: the lack of street lighting. Streets and accesses were left in darkness after dark, making mobility difficult and generating a feeling of insecurity. These areas, far from the main urban centres, required a lighting solution that would improve the quality of life of the communities without depending on the electricity grid.

Costes and complexity of conventional lighting

The installation of a traditional electricity system in these localities was unfeasible. The work required to deploy wiring and connections in dispersed areas raised the costs to unaffordable levels. In addition, the maintenance in rural environments and the ongoing electricity bills were a burden that the municipalities could hardly bear. The lack of lighting was not just an aesthetic problem: it compromised road safety, limited social life and affected the development of communities.

43 Staria solar streetlights to connect communities

The answer came with the installation of 43 Staria solar streetlights, designed to offer autonomy and reliability in environments where there is no electricity infrastructure. Each luminaire operates independently, capturing solar energy during the day and guaranteeing light at night, even in conditions of low solar irradiance common in Atlantic climate zones.

The advantages were evident from the outset:

    • Increased security on rural roads and access roads.

    • Cost reduction compared to conventional electric lighting.

    • Quick installation without the need for complex infrastructure.

    • Autonomous and reliable operation all year round.

Today, communities in these remote areas of the Basque Country enjoy safe, well-lit streets with sustainable lighting that connects neighbours and improves their quality of life. This project demonstrates how solar technology can transform even the most isolated environments.
